You smell gas?
Why does natural gas have a distinctive smell?
Natural gas, as it comes out of the fields, is odourless, but during transport a special substance with a characteristic odour is added in very small quantities in order to be immediately detectable in case of escape.
I smell gas.
What should I do;
- Open all doors and windows in the room as the gas is lighter than air and will be released into the atmosphere
- You should immediately extinguish any lit cigarette or other sources of flame or spark
- You should turn off the main gas supply tap and the switches on all gas appliances

What should I NOT do?
- Under no circumstances should you use matches, lighter or other flame source
- You must not cause a spark, which is not always visible but can be caused even if you call the elevator, use a telephone device, press an electrical or electronic switch, or even turn on a flashlight.
